‘Law and Order’, directed by Ranjith, brings together a police drama, revenge story and mass entertainment, with Prakash Varma in the lead role and Mammootty returning as the iconic Karikkamuri Shanmughan from ‘Black’. Although the film does not offer significant novelty in its theme or treatment, it brings together the elements expected from a mass entertainer and provides a theatrical experience.

Ranjith, who has given major films to Malayalam superstars, including ‘Ravanaprabhu’, ‘Black’, ‘Loham’ and ‘Puthan Panam’, returns to direction after an eight-year gap with a film that does not feature a major star in the principal role. His last full-length theatrical release as a director was Mohanlal’s ‘Drama’.

Produced by Premachandran A.G. and Mahasubair under the banners of Sathyam Cinemas and Mahasubair Movie Kshethra, ‘Law and Order’ has a screenplay by Uday Krishna. Prakash Varma plays the lead role of DSP Balagopal, while Abhirami appears as the female lead. The cast also includes Rithudev Ayyappan, Shanood Ibrahim, Don Michael, Sajal Sudarshan, Nijaad Babu Thomas, Shersha Sherif, Bobby Kurian, V.K. Prakash, Devan, Anand Manmathan, Bheeman Raghu, Suresh Krishna, Joy Mathew, Johny Antony, Gayathri Ashok, Ajay Vasudev, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Nandan Unni, Sabumon and Nandu.

Mammootty returns as Karikkamuri Shanmughan, the iconic character from Ranjith’s ‘Black’. Mohan Jose plays Mammali, Shanmughan’s right-hand man. Screenwriter Uday Krishna also appears in a small role.

Prakash Varma portrays DSP Balagopal, an honest police officer whose life is affected by an incident that goes against the values he has followed throughout his career. He decides to confront those who have pushed his life to its worst point. Despite facing losses, Balagopal continues his fight with the support of a group of young police officers and Karikkamuri Shanmughan.

The film focuses on one of the major challenges faced by society today and presents the idea that the police can eliminate it if they take determined action. The director and screenwriter add dramatic elements to this backdrop. Shanmughan’s arrival, accompanied by the song ‘Ambalakkare Thechikkavil Pooram’ from ‘Black’, creates one of the film’s major theatrical moments. The character’s mention at the beginning itself builds anticipation, while his stylish entry close to the climax adds to the excitement.

Uday Krishna’s screenplay follows familiar formulas, with some dialogues being predictable. However, it contains the ingredients required for a mass entertainer, which Ranjith translates to the screen effectively. Cinematographer Prashanth Raveendran and editor Manoj Kannoth contribute to the film’s presentation.

Bijibal’s background score supports the film’s mass character. His musical treatment, including the revised presentation of ‘Ambalakkare Thechikkavil Pooram’, adds to the overall impact. Shibu Chakravarthy has written the lyrics, while Joe Daniel has composed the music. The songs remain closely connected to their respective situations.

Mammootty’s return as Karikkamuri Shanmughan provides fans with a celebratory moment. Prakash Varma’s portrayal of the honest police officer Balagopal is also notable. His character is distinctly different from George Sir, the police officer he played in ‘Thudarum’. Abhirami performs well as Adv. Veni.

Rithudev Ayyappan, Shanood Ibrahim, Don Michael and Sajal Sudarshan portray young sub-inspectors who bring friendship, enthusiasm and the energy of newcomers to their roles. Shersha Sherif plays villain Prahlad Parekh, also known as Pacha, bringing the required villainy and swagger through his body language and performance. Bobby Kurian plays Denny Padaveedan, a character from the lineage of Lal’s Carlos Padaveedan in ‘Black’, and delivers a notable performance. V.K. Prakash, Devan, Anand Manmathan, Bheeman Raghu and Suresh Krishna handle their respective roles with ease.

‘Law and Order’ does not claim major freshness in either its subject or treatment. However, it brings together emotional moments, a protagonist rising from helplessness, his retaliation and the setbacks he faces along the way. By combining these elements in the measure expected of a mass film, ‘Law and Order’ delivers a theatrical experience.
